A Study on the Factors Affecting Work Stress of Clinical Nurses


Abstract
This study was attempted to measure the degree of work stress among clinical nurses and to identify life factors affecting work stress. The data were collected from 163 staff nurses working at university hospitals in Jeonbuk area from June 1 to August 31, 1986.
The results of the study were:
I: Nurses perception of work stress
1. Mean score of total work stress of nurses was 4.253, when maximum score was 6. High degree of work stress is evident among nurses while working.
2. The highest rank of stress factor was interpersonal relationship with physicians, Night duty, inadequate work condition and payment were other stress factors of higher rank.
II. Relationship between situational variables and degree of stress
There was significant correlationship of nurses¢¥ total work stress score with degrees of health concern (r=0.1037, P=0.050), income satisfaction (r=-011118, P=0.048), and life satisfaction (r=-0.1472, P=0.030).
III. Stepwise multiple regression between situation variables and work stress
21.68% of work stress was explicated only by the degree of life satisfaction, while 51 % of work stress was explicated by adding income satisfaction, required time of travel to works, health concern and sleeping pattern and hours to it.
